What Are The Different Types Of Valves Used In The Chemical Industry?

Apr.01.2025

In chemical processing applications it’s imperative that valves are fit for purpose. Not only must they deliver precise control and dosing, but they should do so whilst handling highly corrosive media. That means sourcing well-constructed valves built from chemical resistant materials that promise safe, reliable and extended service. Fleyenda is specialized in all kinds of valves used in the chemical industry.

Different types of valves used in chemical industry

The following three types of valves are commonly used in chemical applications:

Ball Valves
Ball valves employ a ball to control the flow of chemical media. Rotating this hollow and pivoting ball a quarter turn (90 degrees) around its axis either opens or blocks the flow. Ball valves deliver reliable, air-tight sealing in the closed position, even after long periods of inactivity. Their simple designs make ball valves low maintenance and easy to operate. They are ideal for leak-tight shut off of corrosive and aggressive fluids.

The Parker Hi-Pro Ball Valve offers full cold working pressure ratings up to 689 bar (10,000 psi), giving 100% bubble tight shut-off and continuous repeatable performance for the most demanding process control applications. The two-piece stainless steel design keeps body leakage paths to a minimum, while optional integral compression ends reduce system contamination, installation costs, weight and space.

Check Valves
Check Valves or Non Return Valves (NRV) only allow liquid to flow in one direction to prevent potentially damaging back flow. Owing to their relatively simple design, check valves can operate with very minimal intervention needed. The flow velocity of the fluid determines the degree to which the valve opens or closes. Their simplicity and material options means that check valves are often used in chemical handling applications.
Fluid Controls can supply a variety of high-performance check valves from global leading manufacturers, Parker. We stock their C Series Check Valves and Hi-Check Non-Return Valves. Both of which deliver uni-directional flow control of fluids and gases in chemical applications.

Butterfly Valves
Butterfly valves are designed to isolate or regulate flow. The so-called ‘butterfly’ is a metal disc mounted on a rod. In the closed position, this metal disc is positioned perpendicular to the flow. A quarter turn opens the flow and intermediate rotations enable throttling. Butterfly valves can be operated manually, pneumatically or electronically. They are suitable for use with corrosive liquids at low temperatures and pressures.

Valves for the chemical industry from Fluid Controls
Fluid Controls has been supplying high-quality valves for the chemical industry since 1988. Our extensive range of valves comes from global leaders like Parker, Bürkert and Thompson Valves. As a fully accredited ISO9001:2008 company, we provide a full installation and service facility for every product we supply. We also offer full pressure testing and repairs, as well as in-house or on-site training to optimise your user experience.
